The World Intellectual Property Organization is an agency of the United Nations. Per their website, it is “dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest.”

The website supports a variety of useful resources. These include PatentScope, a database that searches over 1.5 million international patent applications, CLEA, a collection of intellectual property legislation from a variety of countries, and information on the Madrid system for the international registration of marks.

However, an area that researchers may overlook is the statistics page. The site maintains a significant amount of intellectual property data. To help navigate the information, the website includes a “glossary on industrial property statistics.” The page is updated regularly. Patent, trademark, and utility model statistics include numbers for applications filed and granted.
