Liar, Liar

While he doesn’t claim to be as outrageous as Jim Carrey in the popular courtroom comedy, attorney Garth R. Seehawer can lie with the best of them.

At least that is what the Burlington Liars Club said. The 90-year old Wisconsin organization honored Seehawer for crafting the best lie of 2008.

Here it is.

“My grandson is the most persuasive liar I have ever met. By the time he was 2 years old he could dirty his diaper and make his mother believe someone else had done it.”

Though the honor is purely tongue-in-cheek, Seehawer, 71, said it’s an honor to be recognized as the best liar amongst more than 150 worldwide submissions last year.

Of course, being an attorney probably didn’t hurt either.

Seehawer spent 27 years in private practice as a corporate attorney with Foley & Seehawer and later served as vice president and general counsel for Wheaton Franciscan Services, from 1988 until he retired in 1999.

Though he downplayed his career choice as a factor in his victory, Seehawer admits he knows how to creatively craft a sentence.

“I like to write and I’ve certainly done a good deal of brief writing during my career,” he said.

But Seehawer also said that there is at least one group of professionals who might fare even better than attorneys in the competition.

“They don’t allow submissions from politicians, so we obviously aren’t the best,” Seehawer joked.
