IT Means Business

The Wall Street Journal published a story Monday that details the steps organizations can take to better integrate information technology functions with other business units. The authors make the point that Chief Information Officers need not (and probably should not) be the most accomplished techies in the building, but instead should be the most capable of identifying ways in which the organization's business needs can be aided by focused and well-understood IT initiatives.

The ivory tower approach to IT management discussed in the article, in my experience, is more likely to be found in large organizations that are predisposed to strict segregation of business units. Nonetheless, the authors' advice is an excellent reminder of the need to address technology related legal transactions (everything from purchasing a new phone system to developing a model for licensing that flagship product) first an foremost from a business perspective.
