Google Street View

As a follow up to my last post, here's another indicator of Milwaukee's digital credentials: Google Street View has invaded the city. For those of you not familiar with the Street View feature of Google Maps, it is a series of street-level photographs that provides a first-person perspective when viewing mapped locations.

The service launched for San Francisco and several other cities in 2007. From my recollection of some local roadwork projects, it appears that the Milwaukee photographs were captured last summer. I first noticed the feature being available for Milwaukee map results earlier this week.

The thoroughness with which Google infiltrates cities with this service has raised some interesting privacy considerations. While the photographs collected by roving camera trucks only capture what is visible to anyone walking down the street, people have taken issue with the permanent archival their living room windows. The New York times had an early, interesting article on the matter. Google does offer the ability to request removal of objectionable photographs.
